I got it the other way round. He needed Bertholt alive because otherwise he couldn't have saved Armin when the time came, so he sacrifices his mother (and coincidentally traumatised himself) in order to be able to save Armin later.
He really found his peace through insanity, one of the best psychological manga I’ve read.
