It doesn’t have a correlation to him hitting on Shin. Shin is realizing that given how serious Jake’s actual job is, then he might have meant it when he told Shin that he would always look out for him and that they were in this together. However he’s still doubtful because with Jake lying to him about his background, he mistrusts him too much to truly believe anything Jake had said to him in the past.

Between this and the donghua (this haven’t gotten that far in the novel yet), it seemed like General Pei Jr. used some of his spirit to make almost like a clone? I’m my head I likened it to how Bai Feng Jiu and Dong Hua in The Pillow Book make those shadow selves, except less individualized.
