I give this story a pass because:

- He did almost die to protect her. He might do a lot of mistakes but he have a moral compass after all.
- She only got promoted because she managed to blackmail an important noble family. The ML actually stopped carring for the evil woman after the hunting and sided with FL. He won't object to the execution next time FL manage to trap her. Yep, the evil woman is executed so don't wory about that.
- He baked every day for her but it is not why she stayed nor how she started to care for him, it was only a way for him to show he cared and was commited. She started to care for him because he almost died for her, decided to side with her, the sister got a happy end too (so she won't take revenge for her sake) and she pity him. She decided to stay because of noble duty: not only was she not allowed to divorce after the execution but she was clearly up for the task of being queen so almost everyone wanted to keep her specificaly on the throne. Next time the concubine matter is brought out he make sure that everyone understand that there will be no more concubine. He will only have the Queen. Then love was gradual. They actually talked a lot and had children.

It might not be for everyone taste. I too prefere revenge story where the abuser and guilty party is not whitewashed. But it not the worst novel ever. Abandonned Empress and On the Emperor's lap are way way way worst.

The doctor in charge of the fertility test for the candidates overheard the evil woman talking about her plan of getting rid of the future Queen. She was looking for a candidate that was infertile so it will be easier to do so. The doctor thus lied about Lizzy being infertile so she will be choosen. She was from the lowest noble family of all the candidates (the others were all a rank above her) so he kinda sacrificed the weaker link. He regretted having to do that so he also quit is job and now treat poor citizen in the streets. Lizzy found out the truth once she got pregnant and started looking for the doctor that did the test to ask him some questions. The doctor once found told her the truth.
