I think one of the reasons is the two little spirits of him and Theo, I remember the magician let the two spirits go to Seth and Theo because they are part of them, the other reason is because of Theo and their LOVE.
I think when he choses to protect and express his love for Theo that's the needed answer for him to comeback to his senses, if he didn't cameback he would have died, I think he would have scattered into pieces (in a dragon form) or disappeared.
