He’s also aware the contraceptives he’s using could potentially hurt him and at most kill him (these aren’t modern contraceptives). Yet, he’s still caring about his wife who’s using him more than she cares about herself and going so far as to take contraceptives because he knows she likes having sex so much and he can’t bring himself to reject her (at least according to his pov).
I think that’s why some people are praising him. I don’t think it’s the bare minimum when you think about the context of the story.
