Like... I understand why he's letting himself get into this position. He's acting on survival mode, not trying to actually live. Nobody is above being toxic. But if you ever are, the best apology is changed behavior, and that's what happened here. It wasn't just "teehee I fucked up forgive me cuz I love you and that's enough" like we've seen in countless other manga. There was an intention to understand and empathize, an actual apology, a learning curve, an atonement arc, changed behavior, and the willingness to wait and see if everything would be enough to undo what had been done. And it's not even about Takamada's past. It's not like anyone gave him a free pass because he was a mistreated child. It's about how adult Takamada found a way to make it about the present and the future that he wants without being tied down by the past.
