he had Shell shoot him in the place where the metal was hidden. (Good thing Shell is a good shot, right?) This allowed him to fake his death. He was then able to move to the South and live where his parents had once lived. Shell would then only be able to see him every once in awhile when he could slip away with no questions asked.
