I think it meant something else. Like his skin was "dyed" black when he loss his love for humans. Still bad subtext, but I don't think he physically dyed himself a darker color.

So as far as I remember it has sth. to do with the 4th wall. Because of it all the characters see his face not clearly and thus they think he is ugly.

They will but still far from the webtoon, they don't really see his face properly atm, it kinda blurs in their perspective and their brain just accepts it as normal or 'ugly'. Remember when Dokja would say something similar to a spoiler, the people will hear things differently. As well as his phone looks blank to all ppl even to the constellations when he's reading the novel.
