I'm using my English literature deduction skills here and I'm thinking that it's meant to represent how MC doesn't view him as just another cellmate but someone close to him, close enough for him to forgo using numbers to refer to him but rather his name. A show of intimacy and closeness. OR it could be that MC doesn't pay enough attention to him to remain such details and only remember his name as he only views him as a tool to survive prison.
