well to me , i sorta think that bl and gl is the categorization for yaoi , shounen ai , yuri , shoujo ai , etc .
like yaoi + shounen ai goes under the bl category and yuri + shoujo ai goes under the gl category

:0 I never realized that yaoi or yuri could be the improper terms for the genre...I use both p frequently bc I figured there was no difference :’D

I just feel like saying BL and GL is just a way to generalize the categories that encompass them. Rather than specify what to ask for. Like, I asked earlier, what's your favorite bl author, I didnt ask what's their favorite yaoi author because I don't think that there are many authors that specifically do yaoi. They sometimes do collabs for shouju and do shounen ai's so it's just easier to say it that way.

Same here, I usually use bl or gl when asking for recommendations because I usually ask for stories in all of the genres including shounen ai and shouju ai. Plus yaoi and yuri literally means japanese manga that features same sex "sex" so I use bl/gl when referring to manhwas and manhuas
