I don't know when/at what age these people you know met but I am going to assume that they got together after both parties were legal.

I think anything more than a 10 year age gap is more acceptable after the age of 30. At this time, both parties would most likely be at a similar stage in life and have a good idea of what they're doing with their career. both parties would also be fully matured adults (though you can become one in your mid/late 20s, 30+ is a safe bet).
I don't think a relationship with a 10+ year gap should be created before that. This is due to the fact that people in their early 20's/late teens (18+) are young adults, still making to transition from teen to adult. They are usually still trying to decide what to do with their life/career or maybe even what major to take in college to set them up for a better future.
Also, people of this age range are still susceptible to predatory behavior, such as manipulation, or grooming. The only difference is that now the law no longer protects them from such predators. The reason why the 10+ year age gap, or even a 4+ year one in some cases, is due to this predatory behavior. It doesn't matter how "mature," they/their peers think they are (a common excuse used to dismiss predatory behavior), they are still susceptible to being harmed and controlled.
All of this would still apply to the 25 age gap relationship you talked about.
If they got together later on in life, I don't really see a problem with it. I still think it's pretty weird and messed up, especially since it's like marrying your mom/dad age-wise and relationship-wise (since they changed their partner's diapers) but you do you at that point.
