According to Taiwanese folk tales, Zhinu, also known as the Seven Star Maiden (七娘), will reveal a book listing all the unmarried men and women on Qixi (the day of July 7 of the lunar calendar) each year. After Yue Lao, or Old Man under the Moon, receives the book, he will start matching people in it based on their personalities and orientation. Then he will come to the mortal world and use a red string to bind a man and a woman by their feet. The string will guide the two to each other and choose one another as their mate. However, Yue Lao is quite a busy man. If you want to be blessed by him, you should visit his temple, follow the orders of the abbot, and pray to him or Guanyin.

Based on that information and the manhwa that I have read, I have concluded that (contain SPOILER or to be exact all the plot!):
Yue Lao and Zhinu were childhood friends, grew up together, and then married. But for some reason, Zhinu fell in love with a human named Xing Jun. This forbidden affair was discovered and Xing Jun was demoted to a cowherd. However, Zhinu loved Xing Jun too much, Yue Lao finally complied with Zhinu's wishes and connected the red strings between them. I'm not really sure, but I think that after this event, Yue Lao drank "Shattered The Dust" that the old grandmother in hell gave as punishment for helping Zhinu. Well, the Queen said this as "Redeem".
Even though Zhinu was already in hell and had separated from Xingjun, Xingjun still insisted on seeing Zhinu and bringing her back. The Third Prince finally asked Yuelao to make the same potion to Xingjun so Xingjun would forget about Zhinu. Zhinu who knew this balked and at this moment, Yuelao recalled what had happened, his memories slowly returned.
But refusing orders was the same as killing Xingjun. Zhinu finally sacrificed herself. Since Zhinu is currently a part of hell, killing Zhinu will result in a war between gods. Zhinu made the Third Prince unable to move, then took his hand that was holding the weapon and stabbed it into her stomach. This means Zhinu died because the Third Prince was killed her (even though he didn't).
Yue Lao witnessed everything. Hugging Zhihu's body, Yue Lao's memory spun again. (Maybe because he failed to protect Zhinu) Yue Lao ended up killing himself in the same way Zhinu did. Before dying, Yue Lao hoped that they could return home, or what I assumed was a return to a peaceful past.
Then what about Xingjun? Although it isn't explained, I'm sure he survived because the world of gods would be too busy taking care of a human, because after all an important god and a goddess of hell had been killed by the Third Prince. War will not be avoided.
