I think the story would've been more meaningful if the author explored jihyuk's abandonment issues and having him go down a path where he chooses himself instead of a toxic relationship

But the author is doing exactly that. Why do you think Jihyuk jumped to another relationship right away? Even if he doesn't have as strong feelings for Eunsong he wanted to feel chosen and someone to fight for him since his parents death.
This clearly is not the right way to deal with his issues but that's what I like about this author. This is the story of broken people dealing with trauma and how even if you're a victim, you can damage other with your actions. Jihyuk feels he doesn't deserve to be loved even if he desperately needs it, Eunsong because of society expectations has to be ruthless if he wants something even if he hurts the ones he loves through his means, Yoojun never knew what it meant to be loved so when he experienced just one (1) positive relationship (Eunsong) he disregarded everything even his own feelings. You can even talk about Jihyuks brother and how his own feelings of helplessness destroyed his relationship with his brother even if he tries to fix things.
I think that the path of Jihyuk choosing himself would be the best, but, do we humans always choose what's the best for us? Or what's the less painful thing?
I like your analysis but in order for me to be fully content with it, I NEED the ending to point towards Jihyuk choosing himself. So many stories though have the ending where the main character chooses to stay with love interest because they feel more comfort despite their wrongdoings, and while I do think it can still work as an ending, I feel like for this story it would turn out more sugarcoated rather than obviously psychological (and I really don’t think the author is going for this dark angle lol)
An ending where Jihyuk chooses himself would be so perfect because you generally don’t see that in “romance” stories. It’s the best, meaningful ending, but not for a couple, but for Jihyuk.

i remember hate mate being one of the first manhwas i read in 2017 and i remember how i loved the angst and how unrequited love was portrayed. That at the end even if Subin didn't get with his first love , he learned from that experience and moved on. When i saw that this was updated, i was skeptical. I feared that all of Subin's character development would be in vain and that he will eventually get back with his first love. But this is not about getting with an old love, this is about maintaining a relationship and trying to grow up within it as well as reshaping it because a 5years long rs is what people call the boring stage.You already know everything abt each other from habits to pet peeves so all what's left is to learn how to live together and keep nourishing the rs with communication. I also love how well written this is , when it's Jun's pov i'm mostly on his side until his friend points out his shortcomings.
Mikasa opened her black eyes to a never ending green field. She saw a scarlet red scarf getting carried by the wind. It was the scarf that eren wrapped around her when she experienced the dark side of the world.That scarf brought her warmth and protection like eren did. She ran after the scarf in hope of keeping those feelings close to her heart. As she was following it , the setting changed. She saw armin , eren and herself running after each other.Their eyes were vivid and hopeful no worries to what's beyond the walls.The scarf appeared again guiding her to the tree where her and eren used to laze around. From afar she could see a silhouette catching the scarf.As she got closer , she saw him. The one who promised her protection. He was standing tall.His hair combed in a ponytail and he was smiling.A smile she had never seen since the day of the attack, warm and appeasing. His eyes were luminous green. Eren closed the distance between them with a tight hug and in her ears ,he whispered:" Live long.I love you." He wrapped the scarf around her once again. This time representing love and a promise. A promise that she would never forget him. Mikasa opens her eyes once again , this time with eren's head in her hands. She hugs it tightly and whispers : i love you too
