They do and the tragedy happens to be due to what you learn as the series goes i believe; wasn't much on the spoilers for me to learn much on, but that it does end happy. Just a lot of bs and it takes FOREVER for her to cure that magic amnesia and I do mean forever, it was like near the end of the novel she is cured.
