They do and the tragedy happens to be due to what you learn as the series goes i believe; wasn't much on the spoilers for me to learn much on, but that it does end happy. Just a lot of bs and it takes FOREVER for her to cure that magic amnesia and I do mean forever, it was like near the end of the novel she is cured.

She followed him around because of the energy he gave off, she was working out near him cus it was easier for her to work out/train when she was near him. I honestly dont think its ruined the story one bit..
