Wait hold on. If Kate is someone of intelligent who had already exist before meeting Emilyko, who obviously had a some sort of goal to take back whatever this Mirror House is, how does she NOT know that she can control soot until neat the Debutante?
The story made Kate out to be an intelligent girl who was born to suspect the Shadow House, but now she apparently someone of pre-existing before the plot, sound like a big plot hole.
She does know how to control her soot actually. Its just she never tested her max capabilities of her power until emilyko help give her ideas how to use her soot in many different situation.
She does now, but I am talking about all the way from the very beginning where she first realize that she can control her soot because Emilyko's plushie "jump" for the first time.
I think that’s something only taught in the shadow house which she wasn’t aware of. Just a theory but it’s prob something she didn’t need and so u wouldn’t discover those powers unless ur in specific situations.
The shadow house is meant for the shadows to grow and unlock their powers

That's mean if Anthony is this young, then Kate's father, who started a new family after running away, must had have him very late later in life. If Anthony is around 20 years old, then Alfred must have him after 30+ years after running away. OOOORRRRR....his mother was also the same as Kate's mother, Catherine? Anthony said they had different mothers, so he’s not related to Catherine. It’s probably that their father had him later on in life, since men are able to have kids up until the day they die. Anthony’s mother was probably a bit younger though, but I’m assuming that she doesn’t have much plot relevance other than giving birth to him, so I doubt we’ll get any confirmation on that

But as to your question, I highly doubt Anthony’s mother was a morph like Kate’s. That seems like it would be lazy writing to give two very important characters the exact same backstory. Plus Anthony calls Kate his older sister, which wouldn’t make sense if he was born the same way as she was.

Yes, it’s been a while since I’ve read it, but Kate’s mom got attacked by a morph, turning her into a shadow kinda and putting her in a coma, and then 50 years later Kate was born. She started off as a normal human but over time she started turning into a shadow and was fully a shadow by like age twelve I think
