A sad backstory does not excuse bad actions. Re read chapter 22 and 23. She asked for a proper apology and he couldn't give her one. She asked about their relationship, and he couldn't answer her. I understand that a lot of these stories have the FL rushing to fix the ML without the ML putting in any effort. But this situation is a lot more realistic. At the very least he could say that he wants to start their relationship over and become real friends, but he couldn't even do that. He just shifted to asking what her other people(blonde dude and blonde chick) have told her...Like no. She is in front of you NOW, asking you what she means to you. She is in front of you NOW asking what type of relationship you have and what type of relationship you want. You don't respond to those kind of questions with first silence and second defections and expect to keep the person asking the questions on your side.
