nishina have a obscure past: he is cheated by his lover, and this one said that don't know nishina. it causes a big mess on him, and he can't draw anymore neither believes that mens can win against women or gay couple can last; stuff like that
but when he meets naoto, his life changed. naoto was the one who said that his art was good, when everybody said it was a mess.
nishina, little by little, start to believe in someone: naoto
naoto is in love with someone else, and nishina believes that they won't last, because he always see naoto sad or crying, and can't stand it

I guess 'cause Nishina sees himself in Nao a bit. And so he tries to protect him from experiencing the same pain he had to endure by doing what he probably had wanted done for himself.
Problem is, that Nao is NOT in the same situation as Nishina and that's why Nishinas' interventions seem so out of place.
Maybe to Nishina it meant a great deal, that something as simple as a compliment would make him develop feelings for Naoto. Also due to others not appreciating Nishina work whilst Naoto was the only one who did. I guess it's like Nishina seeing a small hope in Naoto and that he can try to put his trust in others.
