In the first chapter he says that he never felt attracted to her and that there are more ways of love than just man and woman, I think the author is now trying to cover for him when he never loved or desired her.

From what he says he is not asexual, but he still admits not to feeling attracted to her.
Exactly, aromantic and asexual aren’t the same thing. Aromantic=no love, Asexual=no sex.
