I think it's a mammals only thing so fish hybrids probably wouldn't be included in this universe if they were I'd hope they genetically have higher immune resistance to things like that.
According to Sex Pistols, mermaid types transform partially if I remember, so I guess they would kinda flop or drag themselves. They're more in danger of getting ill or dying of low temp/bp, especially when they get too cold or during bad weather
