We aren't really given a timeline here, but it doesn't matter considering Koju was a pup/ a toddler in all senses when Shizuka picked him up. And I think Shizuka did a great job of taking care of Koju- until he allowed him to have intercourse with him.
Now, the artist's **preference** is very much questionable even with the fact that this is a "beast" manga. I got uncomfortable many times because usually, only the head and tail are beast-like, but in this, there were many *inappropriate* scenes where he very closely resembled a dog, even aside from his face.
