Comparing this fictional historical story to current times is kinda funny. He's obnoxious and self-centred? Maybe at first, but I think he was stuck in an environment where he was being forced by everyone around him to act "proper" and he's been a free spirit since he was a kid (digging a hole just to escape the lessons) and even now he tries not to get suffocated in the royal bullshit - he doesn't look down on commoners, which is A VERY big deal for a king in that time. They're so far removed from reality that they won't ever dream of it. Moreover, he respects Kang to the point he doesn't allow him to act even a bit formal to him, and let's him talk however he wants to him. As for bringing him to the capital with him, he did it for his own interest true, but it wouldn't be called forcing Kang. He gave him a choice, explained it, said it would be fun to show him a world beyond his own small town, and also fulfilled all his wishes.
He kept him near him (for the art he said) but also for keeping a watchful eye on him to protect him from the political power struggles in the palace. So, seriously,I don't see what he has done to warrant this kind of ridiculous mpression, unless the reader themselves were blind.
If you're comparing this manhwa with other historical bullshit BLs which is plain disrespectful to the author and the story itself.

If he was "obnoxious and self-centred" he wouldn't be giving a shit about Kang to this point, and also he hasn't forced himself on it and treats him as a friend, rather than a subject. I honestly can't see how anyone is deliberately misinterpreting this as being toxic.

1. Never compared to it other historical BLs. Where did I mention that?

2. I compared it to modern times because the OP might be using modern times to compare as why he said San might be a psycho.

3. Forcing the Kang's Father's subordinate to find out who Kang is when his father was desperately hiding the truth for legit reasons aka fearing San will do something horrible to someone who is divinity. Because San closed all temples and disbanded every organization that had anything to do to temples. But of course he had to go force someone who basically had no choice but to tell him. Not because it could be a threat to his life but because he wanted to know.

4. Telling Lady Hee how boring her painting is when it was him who would go to her room and always ask for paintings or orchids. Yes Lady Hee is a bitch but women in the harem are cut throat because in order to survive, one must have the affection of the emperor (which is we all know historically accurate). His words and actions is what drives the actions of the concubine. I wont even start about leaving a pregnant lady behind without saying a word. Yes its a womb he doesnt like but that woman is still pregnant and potentially carrying a future heir.

5. Balance is what maintains the internal harem, he has influence on that balance but also cannot be interfering when trouble brews, like what he mentioned. That siding will Kang will aggravate the ladies more but he continues to openly show favor, staying with him when he has already announced going to Lady Chang's residence. Spending the night in Kang's room right after telling Lady Hee's drawing has gone boring. "Ive tasted something sweeter" is a line he used to describe why suddenly, Lady Hee isnt jn his favor anymore.

6. Which all goes back to what OP said, Kang might be in trouble not because of San's direct actions but because he's been doing what he wants which gives Kang unnecessary attention. When one becomes at the top, one gains a lot of responsibilities.

7. Its not because he respects Kang that he allows him to continue talking in that way, its because he's found entertainment in him. Thats 2 different things. Like what you said he's a free spirit and being stuck in the castle has made him bored. Kang is a new source of entertainment for him.

8. Maybe obnoxious is too strong so i'll take it back. But he is nowhere near pleasant too. Forcing someone, to the point of ripping his clothes. And he wasnt given a choice, its just that he had no choice but to go to the palace. Because if he stayed, he doesnt know what will happen to his father. Where is the friendship in a relationship between an emperor who can do anything he wants and a subordinate who is brought to the palace to become said emperors entertainment. Tho i expect shifts in their dynamics in the future, some improvement since this is shounen ai and theyre bound to cross that line some time in the future. But right now that is what they are.

9. San has his good qualities. I never did say he didnt. Its just that i didnt mention it. There is no perfect ruler, each coin has a side. Perhaps all the flaws ive listed exists because he is a ruler. We can list all the good things about him but why should we ignore the flaws too?

tbh since they're the main characters sometimes I find myself ignoring the things the ML has done. yo tbh my honest opinion about him is that hes kind of trash. yeah this is historical and he has a wife and concubines and whatever but ,,, he really only thinks about what he wants, what a selfish dude. As for his getting bored with her drawings, isn't that quite normal? He likes it, but he found Kang's drawings way too realistic and of course he's a divine being so she couldn't even compare. He doesn't mistreat her, so what's your issue?

After san told him he could see many new things in the capital that he hasn't seen before, kang said it would be a good idea. Also once the king made sure his father wouldn't suffer even a bit because of him going, he was reassured. And also, he clarifies with the king if he was taking him only because he respects his art abilities...so as to not gave any funny ideas and san said yeah it's just because of that.
You say he's only an entertainment to him, so why would he take him along to have a morning horse ride without any guards??? Do you know how against the norm that is?? Unles the emperor treated the other one as an equal??? And also before he gave him any kind of title, he asked him what he wanted to be in his palace, not forcing him to be anything stupid. Also he's hidden his art skills from everyone, so nobody would suspect his divine abilities or question his existence or trace back his origins to his father.

Literature is read by diff people so diff people will interpret it in different ways. There are trash MLs in a lot of other Historical BLs. Yes San is definitely better than them but that doesnt mean everyone should like him. I don't like his attitude and thats up to me as I am reading this work and I am interpreting it so stop taking it personally.
