YES, they do get together at the very end. It is a happy ending. It builds up like a tragedy but things do get better. The plot way outweighs the romance, with us mainly getting to know how this apocalyptic world works, how things just continue to WORSEN. This a mega slow burn, but it fits the setting because that’s just how it’s going to be between a xenogenic and the arbiter. Both of them change each other for the better. We mainly see their really cute couple moments towards the end and in the epilogue.

quickly wear the face of the devil -> one of the first ones i’ve read, a very classic beloved quick transmigration novel that has many arcs and you don’t get bored.
if u wanna find very good novels on ur own, i suggest filtering series on NovelUpdates :D you can filter it by genre, rating, etc. and ppl make recc lists, so if you are very nostalgic for little mushroom, you can go on its novel page and click on one of the relevant lists to see what other novels ppl who enjoyed little mushroom recommend :) HAPPY READING!!!

The epilogue is like a series of short episodes depicting after the main story ends, so we see a bit more about what happens to the main couple AND to the other characters like Hubbard & Tang Lan (though sadly not much). For one, a few of the episodes depict An Zhe and Lu Feng traveling around the Abyss together to look for the cave he originated from, and then we in the mean time get to see some really cute scenes between them that were entirely deprived from us during the main story!!

An Zhe finds out that his spore is in the damn human laboratory. While Lu Feng is away to help quell disaster at the other base across the world, An Zhe steals his spore and escapes (the researchers put him on the Wanted list since his spore is a valuable specimen). He cannot find his original cave, however, and ends up stumbling across Tang Lan who turns out not to be dead but rather became a mutation with human consciousness. He’s brought to a laboratory building past the Abyss where the Fusion Faction is / mutated beings with human consciousness and meets an exiled but very important researcher called Pauli if I remember right. Whole lot of science stuff about how Pauli investigated that the reason for the change that the world underwent was do to FREQUENCIES, and they have a device that is able to depict these frequencies. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when I talk about it in short, but as it turns out, since An Zhe is immune to infection, his frequency is the perfect stability that is required to resolve the widespread infections and chaos in the world. He sacrifices himself in front of Lu Feng, who we see through subtle actions truly does care about An Zhe despite his prioritizing the survival of humankind. But then we find out that An Zhe technically did NOT die since his spore still exists…
I’m cutting out some very, very good emotional scenes here especially one between An Zhe and Lu Feng when Lu Feng was finally open to An Zhe about all the “sins” he committed, and An Zhe accepted him for who he was. You definitely, definitely should read Volume 2.
