What she should have done, if she weren't in such a bad place herself, is to encourage his strengths, direct him towards goals he can achieve. I certainly don't think highly of parents who fill children with pipe dreams. Those that show that despite the challenges of the world, there is still a place for the child in it? That there's happiness waiting for them, and how to plan for their future? Those parents I admire.
