Chaeyoon constantly associating Death with being Honorable is hugely due to the way society has idolized those who have passed in the dungeon as well as his best friend being a martyr. Which is why I believe him staying alive is what brings him so much guilt and shame. It hurts seeing Chaeyoon’s sparks in his eyes come back when he talks of dying like his best friend. At this point dying would be a kinder fate for him ┗( T﹏T )┛
