Well, the Duchess is overall not a very good person (manipulative, torture, blackmailing, narcissist, bully, instigator, yada yada etc). They only got an arranged marriage due to her blackmailing him, she doesn't even care for or love him, she actually just wanted the Duchess position and the power who come with it (can see her side for that period of time), the only way he could get a divorce is if she initiated it (due to the blackmail) but she would only do so if the position was no longer good for her, he found that the way to do so, since she cares so much about how society views her (understandable for that period of time) would to have a mistress he cared for more, which would affect her reputation and then cause her to divorce, finally freeing him from her. At the very least that is the why he needed another woman, as I understand the story so far.
