AoAo can't grow up because he doesn't have a dragon pearl, something all other dragons normally have. AoAo doesn't know this but it's because in his past life as Ao Yue (also known as Xuan Yue) his dragon pearl got stolen.

and its because his dragon pearl is ”fated” as actually the demon king's sealed power. Its what happened back then when they received a prophecy of sealing the power to baby aoao.,
however the past normal jifeng from backstory doesnt seem to correspond on the past ryan we are seeing in current (the persona with ryan). that persona is probably the demon king., and Past ryan the same ryan as before,, its could be why xuan yue was cursing xiao jifeng to never be together with the one he loves the most,, even though xuan yue and xiao jifeng are both inlove at each other,, the one xuan yue said that to, is not xiao jifeng but the demon lord who ppssesses him.
And since it is fated, as the best thing to do, forcing the sealed power to aoao,, aoao probably will conquer demon king by making defeating or banishing him,, or making him inlove in a healthy way in the far future
