Came here for the drama lol. Yea i know it’s wrong to read manhwas illegally but because of these huge amount illegal readers, those physical manhwas or merch selling well because we appreciate the author. Eventhough we already read and didnt understand korean, we bought it. Why? Because we respect the author and also want to help them. Take bj alex for example. I bought 2 volumes even if it costs me fortune. Ofc we want to read legally too but some of the countries cant even download the apps and makes it hard to access it. So, we buy the manhwas and merch instead to support the author. There’s bad side in illegal readers but the good side is, they will buy the merch and official manhwa instead. Because they know author’s work is great and decided to support the author and idolize the author instead. Sorry for my terrible english.
;A; not all webtoon getting physical book... only the most popular one in legal sites. merch for manhwa is a bit rare, too...because not all company interested in making those and some of the production was funded by the artists themselves (except for the bonus merch for buying physical books)
usually the community will direct us to bypass the app and register (i have people helping me to set accounts for most of korean & english sites, they also facilitate foreign payment and passport verification for mature section. kakaopage kr is the only exception because they strictly ask for local phone numbers T_T). i still need vpn to open them, but it is worth to support the author.
<mostly i read webnovel, which also have only limited amount of print edition (if there is any) and the digital version is much cheaper>
Same here. Even if I read here, I still support the series I like legally such as Cherry Blossom after Winter on TappyToon. She’s definitely not wrong in wanting compensation but the way she went around doing things is so off putting. Korean artists should take many notes from the much more professional Japanese artists. You will hardly ever find Japanese artist insulting fans personally on Twitter even if they are provoked. They simply just ignore and use their company to take any necessary legal action against the illegal sites. That’s professional. Calling people foreign cockroaches and aliens ain’t it chief. Look at the popularity of Japanese manga too. Like One Piece, Naruto etc. All these series blew up in popularity at the very height of piracy and illegal scans. Some even say piracy helped it blow up internationally. In fact nowadays we can even read the newest chapters of Shounen Jump manga for FREE legally every week in English on official SJ app. They just load up the app with ton of ads which is perfectly fine. It’s smart. Because they know piracy isn’t going anywhere, so they find a way to use it themselves. Meanwhile Korean artists throwing petty fits and alienating their own potential future customers which is why manhwa will never blow up in popularity internationally, not to the point of how Japanese manga does, not even close.
yeah i feel like lezhin's business model isn't the best either.
webtoon app lets you read all chapters for free, then offers the 3 latest chapters for premium coins. in return, it draws a lot of readers away from piracy while sneakily getting all of us hooked to pay for those chapters every week.
and based on the tens of millions of app users reading their works, i'm guessing they're making a good amount of money with that strategy.
Lezhin is not as big as Naver or kakao corp :( , they don't have many options to make more free episodes as Naver webtoon or Kakaopage, even in my opinion, newer platform like Copin and manta copes better than Lezhin in term of service (copin also doubles as publisher, so they don't have a problem and push for simultaneous release as their korean counterpart as their main selling point, while manta is a subscription app with cheap rate and we are able to read EVERYTHING)
Naver webtoon have their downside (slow update for licensed manhwa, compared to their korean native. and foreigner has a hard time if they want to purchase because passport is needed to verify), but they are good for people who likes freebies, just don't forget that RATING AND LIKE matters. the local webtoonist in my country often discouraged because people just prefer the freebies and not contributes to their rating :(
even when they provide free episodes, naver profit is not limited to their webtoon app, so all is good. indie illustrators have more freedom to make merch, too.
FCK THAT WAS HOT AF!!!! I WANNA BE WOONYOUNG SO BAD ╥﹏╥
