I think that everything is real. The novel he thought he got transmigrated to is the reality and the life he lived before was just a coping mechanism for him to escape his reality because he was hurt too much and his mind just made a fake scenario to cope up.

Imagine putting yourself in his shoes: he's a prince, constantly under threat from someone who wants him dead. It's natural for him to be cautious and skeptical, even towards those close to him. Being in such a high position makes it incredibly difficult for him to trust others. So, before criticizing him, understand his situation before forming any negative opinions about him.

I really like their character. It's not the typical story wherein it's all lovey-dovey between the main characters. It's a bit angsty but not that heavy. Both are red flags that's why they suited each other.
