WTF! What was the point of this story again....? Now he has son?! That's so random af! How is that possible when all the women he slept with died? What a waste of time.. ̄/ - ̄
yeah probably was the first girls child, but I was more surprise that he was at that place that long to have a child that age
Bora was the girl with purple hair. There was a time when the MC was taking over the island that we didn't see her around. I always wondered where she went off to all of a sudden.
At one point we learned that pregnant women retreat to a cave to give birth and raise children. We don't know how long pregnancy lasts for them, and we certainly don't know what would change with a hybrid child.
Given the deep wrinkles on the MC's gaunt face, a long time has passed since he left the first island. He was young when he arrived, probably early twenties. Since he isn't graying yet, he's now likely in his forties. Unless the fruit has some effect on his body's ability to produce catalase, which breaks down the hydrogen peroxide buildup that causes gray hair, in which case he could be even older. In any case, he's spent at least twenty years on the second island.
As for the point of the story, it can serve as an allegory to modern society and the artificial power structures in place that keep the abundance we're now able to produce locked away. We aren't as well off as these islanders, but we're close. As technology improves, we might one day reach that point. Even today, if we set our mind to it, we could feed the world, but it isn't profitable. Millions of tons of unsold food rots every day, but shipping it off to those who need it costs money.
This chapter revealed one other important mystery. Just like the elves turn into trees when they die, the seals don't stay small. What the MC was feeding those islanders were the giant ocean monsters' children. The lurking shadow in the ocean that ate the elf is an adult seal. I wonder what role they play in the overall ecology, since the elves have a pretty self-sustaining cycle with the fruit-bearing tree transformation. Reminds me of the piggies from Orson Scott Card's "Speaker for the Dead".
