I think something have gone really wrong or that dungeon was extremely dangerous, which required for Eve to use too much of his powers, so Adam had to use a strong dose of that guide amplification inducer, that caused him to loose one of his eyes (a few chapters before he said it was a common occurrence for guides that used that thing). Plus I also think that not only Adam lost an eye, but he also got into dangerous and ended up badly hurt, maybe Eve couldn't save him on time, so he got mad and gone berserk and destroyed many things he shouldn't and killed innocent people in his anger, so the center decided that it would be best to erase their memories and separate them cuz Eve was too obsessed for his guide, or Eve erased their own memories, maybe? Anyway, I think it might be something like that, but I could also be totally wrong and BWAT can surprise us with an even more unexpected past
