It did happen when he went outside. An old lady mentioned about a little lady of the ducal house. He kind of put the pieces together and concluded that she was a daughter, not a son. It's been a while since I've read it but I think he also confirmed it with someone and saw a family painting. Sorry, I forgot what exactly happened.
