Yes the FL is timid, and hides a lot of things, but that’s all stem from the way the ML treats her. He never shows that he actually cares about her, what he did to her by showing some kindness is just a tiny basic things he need to do as a husband. She is definitely lonely and fighting alone.

You treasure a friendship by treasuring the person. Manipulating him using Cheongho to get him to secretly give up wasnt done to spare Hyunjin being hurt, he knew perfectly well he'd also get hurt this way, it was so he could avoid actually facing Hyunjin's feelings. Again, it's totally understandable but it was selfish.
That and the fact that he also had zero knowledge on Cheongho but was still fine throwing his "dear" friend into his arms if it meant he'd move on from him
