You can hate the character but also appreciate the backstory and have empathy for certain aspect of their past.
I am revolted at how he treated penelope but I'm also sad about how he had to grieve the lost of his sister and forced to live with his father's method of dealing with his grief.
He is still awful for wanting to control her aspect of living and bully her until her former death. So maybe stop downvoting people for seeing the nuances in his circumstances(whilst still placing responsibility for his actions)
I genuinely feel so bad for Derrick(doesn't excuse his current acts) but I can't possibly imagine losing your sister forever because you made a silly decision to have fun as siblings. I can't imagine how much pain and blame he place on himself.
I don't think it's right for people to say he has incestuous love for Yvonne because he has feelings for penelope. I know they are similar looking but she came in his life after he lost his one and only sister that he knew in his life. But it is still weird he ends up falling in love with a kid he knew would become his family. He treated her awfully too just because he harbors those weird feelings.
But yeah, I feel so bad for the real Yvonne(not a spoiler cuz come on, the hints are already there)
But that's the thing isn't it? They never really saw Penelope as a sister. They always viewed her as an interloper. And in Derrick's mind, it twisted into something else.
Penelope is someone he believes he can control. By doing so, it kinda mitigates his sense of guilt but not really. She became an outlet for his frustrations and inadequacies and for every 'wrongdoing' she did, he makes the issue bigger than it is because that way, nothing is his fault. I know it's a little more nuanced than that but I just can't like a guy who hates on a little girl on principle.
Yes, it wasn't really his fault that happened to Yvonne. A kid wouldn't have been able to do anything at the time. I guess he deserves more sympathetic understanding but my petty ass can't muster the strength.
