I haven’t read the novel, but I feel like it’s giving mental illness. Like he was thinking about her so much through the torture that he developed a hate for her bc he was going crazy. I mean there’s no reason to treat her like ahit either, but he’s just crazy period.
I believe that's especially the case with ML as he way going mad from the torture as he was thinking of FL, blaming her for what he went through to not go completely mad and end up truly broken. It's similar to cases where parents who choose to go through pregnancy and end up experiencing severe hardships either from abusive partners or overall situations in life end up blaming their kids for it and treating them like sht as to not go mad blaming themselves.
