There are many ways to write up a 2nd lead that the audience likes without taking the spotlight from the main lead. Like there’s ways red head could’ve been liked but still had the main lead being rooted for yk. Example-cain from yours to claim. Green flags all around without him being a comeplete shit show to the main character. Authors note is a bit off but …art is superb but story line kinda makes you not care about it the character and contents after a while (all my opinion)
