I think that was because if the saintess doesn't have the spirit king, she can't do anything and might just be exiled/executed/etc.
Turns out, saintess doesn't have any powers of her own so if MC wanted to get her together with the duke, first step would be to ensure the saintess actually has some power. Also, MC ends up pretty much using him without a contract anyway because the spirit king thinks MC is 'special'.
