Well It's probly bc in real life almost everyone have black hair i mean probly Author make their character have various hair color so the main character can stand out more than anyone, and we as readers could easly know who is who based on hair color and stuff like that
I get what you're saying, but I don't think it applies to this story. The fl had distinct red hair and I think it was mentioned throughout the story, so there is no plausible reason why ml shouldn't have known.
