If his mother was really the only thing pushing him, there are 100 other choices, he's doing this because in his mind, letting go of the Crown Prince position is not an option. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking that he's a victim with no other choices here. This is a conscious decision he's making and accepting consequences is part of that.
