This is basically a detail for the character's occupation.
Sleeping in different places like that is normal for people with his job as, IF he ever gets found by an enemy, the person will need to look for him, which means wasting time that he can then use to counter attack or run off. He does after all have a dangerous job. And this tactic is frequently used by professionals or even just people on the run.
I understand it's confusing for people who're not familiar with the subject. But think of it as a movie displaying accurate irl behavior/practices in a setting with a horse saddling, cleaning or training moment: Some things are small details that might seem unimportant to most or people might not know the significance of but for knowledgable people it's a lovely detail that portrays accurate irl things that make the scene just a little better due to going an extra step of showing true details. :)
It's certainly a weird detail, but not if you consider the meaning behind it (aka staying safe from enemies).
