I believe it is valid criticism that Yuki's character is very dragged on and very little development is taking place, but do not mention Uenoyama when right not it is not about him nor Mafuyu it is about Hiiragi.
The story is about different characters and their development of a romantic relationship, that's why there was the Haruki and Akihiko Arc. The point being is that the story isn't JUST about Mafuyu and Uenoyama.
Whether you like it or not, this is semi-realistic in the sense that a friend THAT important in your life that you admire so much, just dies, you don't forget about them. Of course, you should expect Yuki to be used, however, I, like most people, think there are multiple areas where he could be omitted though)
It is not about Uenoyama and Mafuyu right now, so there is genuinely no point in bringing them in to refute Yuki's presence when Yuki's presence is being used to bolster Hiiragi's character, not Mafuyu or Uenoyama.
