A spin off is like a side story or extra story that’s based on the main series but focuses on a different concept. Sometimes it’s alternate timeline (like the modern potn concept), or a different character as the main character etc. An example for this is Rock Lee & His Ninja Pals, which is a spin-off of the anime Naruto, but is a chibi concept with Rock Lee as the main character. hope this makes sense :))

instead of being in the Joseon era which was like 500 years ago, "modern spinoff" means taking the same story but putting it in 21st century time that we currently live in. sorry if that's hard to understand
