I have a theory, so don't take this as canon. What I think is that the duke had two wives maybe?? in early chapters we saw that he indeed had someone, who wanted their child to be named Cossette. sth happened, they not together and Keira was born from another mother. From the diary Keira just read, it's maybe possible, that through blood-related touch, the not chosen one can actually see the spirits or even communicate with them.
