probably different cultural implications? I know some Asian standard of plain has a different meaning. it means to be kind of demure and fragile-
whereas beautiful is often more like...voluptuous and sexy.
I guess it's one of the ways to make the main characters stand out. Even if they look pretty when drawn, in the actual novel, their looks are average.

i get why their insulting her but when i see characters saying she’s plain like that my brain doesnt compute.
