The reason he married her was he didn't want to her marry someone else since he relied on her as an emotional crutch. Even his reason for marrying her was selfish and he looked like he was at funeral the entire wedding, reminiscing how much he loved his first wife and wondering why he wasn't as happy at his wedding to Sarah as he was with his wedding to Diane.

If he didn't want kids he should have gotten the snip snip, though they usually only make sure your sperm can't get out I would have advised him to just have the whole thing removed as to not feel tempted by the best friend of his late wife, who he supposedly loved dearly and was the only one for him. Since he never told FL that he loved her.
I don't think it was really a case of not wanting kids. Yes he was traumatised and clearly not ready, it was more he didn't love Sarah to actually want to have kids with her. From the get go I didn't sense any "love" from him towards Sarah.
He didn't want to even share a bed with her AFTER they were married unless it was for sex.
I mean he even recollects how differently he treated Diane when she got pregnant to how he treated Sarah. It wasn't even due to "love" he came back but guilt.
