i don't think cain was a dog in their past life. i tend to believe the animal theme doesn't go further than cain and yahwi having a dog/cat's personality and the "master" part, at least in the present time, has more to do with jooin having cain/yahwi wrapped around his finger. i feel like cain was a poverty-stricken dude in joseon era (maybe living with dogs and "sleeping on the floor" with them and gaining the name of canis lupus or whatever his name is) when big-hearted, noble-man jooin took pity on him and gave him a place to stay by making him his servant. that'd explain why he pulled the same trick this time around and faked his poor financial status. also, maybe cain feels like he's indebted to jooin so that's why he's so overprotective and the reason why he keeps calling him master now.
also, maybe the author plans to make them star-crossed lovers? noble/servant relationships were taboo in joseon era and maybe cain never confessed his feelings, and now jooin loves someone else :)
