This is my understanding of that `protecting through caste game`

I forgot the anmes so I'm using Uke and Seme LOL! pardon

Sooo.. in order to protect the uke, the seme choose to become the king instead, remember when the uke was the king ? he was so mean and he said that `why should the strong ones cares about the weak?` at ch.4
and at that moment (still when he was the king) for sure many people triggered hatred towards him/uke (being a total jackass) so the seme (in my opinion) Chose to be the king so that when the karma for the uke comes sooner or later, he's the only one who can bully the uke.

Well you can't change the fact that this manga is messed up, but this is only answering you regarding your confusion about the protecting stuffs =)

when i say bully/ well you can guess as u see that the seme is in fact mean in any way you look at it, but it is his own way of protecting the one he loves, for he cannot change the fact that this game exist and he can't just make it stop

like umm no other way, or no option, i think a wise move of the seme actually.

as for developing love and stuffs
look back at ch.1 (well i can't remember much)
but there is this scene where the seme sees the uke half naked (shirts button widely opened, showed most of the skins) and He blushes,.

At that moment should be the hint that he has hidden desires towards the uke !
