It's been a while since I read the novel (and I didn't get very far in it), but according to his first POV scene, which was pretty early on,

He apparently has demon blood (I think?), which awakened that time he wouldn't come out of his room. He started avoiding her less because "he's a monster" and more because his demonic bloodline meant that he and her, who had spirit powers, were natural enemies. I think he was afraid he'd hurt her accidentally because his powers hadn't settled yet?

But like I said, it's been a while since I tried to read the novel. Around a year? So I don't remember much.
