Yeah, but it does make sense. He's sneaking into a high-end college and clawing his way up. He cannot have an honest relationship with anyone without exposing his fraud. His bitter, arrogant mentality helps put emotional distance between him and others, distracting from any guilt or loneliness he might feel.
