To be fair, Ian does leave Raymond, even if it's not with Francois. He pulls a whole disappearing act leaving behind 'sorry' on a piece of paper and going off to some sort of boarding house thing where he paints.

From what I understand, he doesn't leave of his own free will, he is kidnapped, and it was orchestrated by the Princess. But, he decides to stay away for his own good.
